About the speech & drama classes
Welcome to the 2017 syllabus for speech and drama classes. I hope that we have managed to include something for everyone. You will be assured of a warm welcome, whatever your age - so do have a go.

Some classes have changed this year so please read them carefully. We have two new class this year - Share a Poem (for 2 people to share) and Sacred Text so why not give them a go.

Please can I draw your attention to the fact that a copy of any 'Own Choice' pieces need to be sent to me by 1st February 2017. Please contact me if you need any further help. We look forward to seeing you in March.

Mime classes
  • In all mime classes the only props allowed are a table and chairs.
   
Class 220 Solo mime 11 years and under
  Not in costume. Title only to be announced.
One of the following: (a) The Fright (b) The Pet Shop
Time limit 2 minutes

Class 221 Solo mime 15 years and under
  Not in costume. Title only to be announced.
One of the following: (a) The Audition (b) At the Campsite
Time limit 3 minutes.

Class 222 Solo mime 16 years and over
  Not in costume. Title only to be announced.
One of the following: (a) The Stalker (b) The Disappointment
Time limit 4 minutes.

Class 223 Duo mime - open
  Not in costume. Title only to be announced.
One of the following: (a) Houseparty (b) The Boss
Time limit 5 minutes.

Class 224 Group mime - open
  Not in costume. Title only to be announced.
One of the following: (a) At the Fair (b) On the Beach

  • Please ensure your choice is appropriate for the age of your audience - see Rule 18.

Solo Acting
  • Competitors in solo acting classes are reminded that in order to qualify for copyright indemnity, the title, author and publisher (if known) must be announced at the time of the performance.

  • Time limits exclude introductions.

Reading at Sight Classes
  • For these classes all books are available in paperback editions and may be obtained from Quinn's Bookshop in Market Harborough. (01858 432313)
  • At the beginning of each class our Adjudicator will choose the passage for reading aloud from the selected text. Competitors will be given a few minutes to study the passage before they are asked to read it.
   
Class 240 Reading at Sight 8 years and under

Class 241 Reading at Sight 10 years and under

Class 242 Reading at Sight 12 years and under

  • Music may be used in these classes, but no props are allowed.
  • Poems must be memorised (except Open class)
   
Class 245 Group speaking 8 years and under

Maximum time limit 10 minutes. Groups may be conducted if necessary

Class 246 Group speaking 11 years and under
  (a) “There was Once a Whole World in the Scarecrow’ by Brian Patten
AND (b) Own choice as a contrast
Maximum time limit 10 minutes. NO conducting allowed

Class 247 Group speaking 14 years and under
  (a) “The Song of the Jellicles” by TS Eliliot
AND (b) Own choice as a contrast
Maximum time limit 10 minutes. NO conducting allowed

Class 248 Group speaking 15 years and over
  Own choice
Maximum time limit 15 minutes
No conducting allowed.

Class 249 Group speaking - open
  Own choice
Maximum time limit 15 minutes
Unlike all other group speaking classes - in this class, the poems are to be READ.

Bible Reading Classes
  • In classes 250-252 only the Authorised, NEB or Good News editions of the Bible are allowed.
   
Class 250 Prepared Bible reading 12 years and under
  Own choice from St Mark's Gospel
Time limit 3 minutes.

Class 251 Prepared Bible reading 14 years and under
  Own choice from the Acts opf the Apostles
Time limit 3 minutes.

Class 252 Prepared Bible reading 15 years and over
  Own choice of verses from The Book of Daniel
Time limit 3 minutes.

Class 253 Sacred Text - Open
NEW CLASS Own choice of a reading from any Sacred Text
Time limit 3 minutes.

Public Speaking Class
Class 254 Public speaking - open
  Competitors to give a prepared talk on any subject.
Time limit 5 minutes (A short time will be allowed for setting up)

Family and Friends Entertainment Class
Class 248 Group entertainment by 3 of more performers - open
  A mixture of some or all of the following
Poetry, Prose, Drama, Movement, Music (live or recorded)
Time limit 10 minutes

Original Composition Classes
  • Original Composition texts should be sent to the Speech Secretary by 1st February 2017.
  • Prize winning entries in these classes will be read at the discretion of the Adjudicator.
   
Class 250 Original Composition in Verse 12 years and under.

Class 251 Original Composition in Verse 15 years and under.

Class 252 Original Composition in Verse 16 years and over.

Class 253 Original Composition in Prose 15 years and under.
  500 words or less

Class 254 Original Composition in Prose 16 years and over.
  500 words or less
